Free Numbers 1–9 Worksheets: Counting, Tracing & Coloring

Looking for a simple way to practice numbers 1–9? This free kindergarten math worksheet brings together four colorful activities: counting pictures, completing number sequences, matching numbers to groups, and coloring by number.

Use it for a short learning session at home, classroom practice, or a kindergarten math review.

What Will Your Child Practice?

The main goal of this worksheet is to help children count objects from 1 to 9 and connect each number with the quantity it represents.

Through the four activities, children also practice writing numbers, completing number sequences in forward and backward order, and finding groups that match a given number. The color-by-number activity adds practice in recognizing numbers and following simple directions.

Use this worksheet to reinforce early number skills at your child’s own pace.

What’s on the Worksheet?

1. Count and Write

Count the objects in each box, then write the total in the empty square. Children count familiar pictures, including stars, cars, flowers, fish, and chicks.

2. Complete the Number Sequences

Look at the numbers on each caterpillar and fill in the missing ones. Check the direction carefully—one caterpillar counts backward!

3. Match Numbers to Groups

Read the number on the left. Count the objects in each group, then color the group or groups that match. Some rows have more than one correct answer!

4. Color by Number

Follow the color key to color the butterfly scene. Match each number in the picture to its color.

Skills to Practice

These activities give children practice with:

  • Counting objects up to 9.
  • Recognizing and writing numbers.
  • Putting numbers in order.
  • Counting forward and backward.
  • Matching numbers to quantities.
  • Following a number-and-color key.

Tips for Parents and Teachers

Try one activity at a time. Encourage children to point to each object as they count, and let them check their answers before moving on.

For the caterpillar activity, read the first few numbers together to work out whether the sequence goes forward or backward.
